How This Works

The VA doesn’t just add your ratings. They use “whole person” math where each rating is taken from the efficiency that’s left.

Example: A 30% rating leaves you 70% efficient. A second 20% rating is 20% of that 70%, which is 14%. Your total is 30 + 14 = 44%, which rounds to 40%.

We do the math for you, including the important bilateral factor for opposite limbs.

Understanding Your VA Disability Rating

Navigating the VA's disability rating system can feel overwhelming. A common point of confusion is how multiple ratings are combined. The VA doesn't simply add percentages together. Instead, they use a "whole person" theory, where each disability rating represents a reduction in your body's overall efficiency.

For example, if you are 100% healthy and receive a 30% disability rating, the VA considers you 70% efficient. If you then have a second 10% rating, it's calculated as 10% of your remaining 70% efficiency (which is 7%), not an additional 10%. Your combined rating would be 30 + 7 = 37%, which the VA rounds to 40%. Our calculator handles this complex "VA Math" for you instantly.

Key Factors in Your Calculation

Several elements can impact your final rating. One of the most important is the Bilateral Factor. The VA provides a rating enhancement when a veteran has service-connected disabilities on paired limbs, like both arms or both legs. This acknowledges the significantly greater impact on daily life. Our calculator automatically applies the 10% bilateral bonus to the combined bilateral disabilities, ensuring a more accurate estimate.

Your final compensation also depends on your specific dependent status, including your spouse, children, and dependent parents. Be sure to enter this information accurately to see the complete picture of your potential benefits.
